Charles E. Marshall, Jr., 93 of Grafton, passed away Monday, March 8, 2010, at his residence, after a short illness.
He was born, August 11, 1916, in Grafton, WV, the son of the late Charles E. Marshall, Sr., and Carrie (Netzer) Marshall.
Mr. Marshall is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Elizabeth (Gerkin) Marshall; a son, Charles J. Marshall; and a daughter, Jane (Marshall) Cost and husband Jason. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Edward Marshall, one infant grand-daughter Elizabeth Marie Marshall, a brother Donald N. Marshall and a sister Virginia Lee (Marshall) Barnes.
Also surviving are six grandchildren: James Stephen Marshall of Dunbar; Sherri Marie (Marshall) and spouse Bill Dougherty of Dunbar; Sarah Katherine (Marshall) and spouse Brian Price of Huntington; Christopher Edward Marshall of Charleston; Joel Matthew Cost and spouse Celeste (Good) of Huntington; Jared Marshall Cost and spouse Karissa (Vallorani) of Morgantown; a daughter-in-law, Melody Sue (McVicker) Marshall and four great-grandchildren; Rebecca Marie Marshall, Luke Allen Dougherty, Emily Sue Dougherty and Jackson Alton Price.
Mr. Marshall retired in 1976 as the Terminal Train Master at Grafton, after 36 years of employment with the B&O - C&O – CSX Railroad.
Mr. Marshall was a WWII Veteran, having served from 1942-1945 with the 343 Air Service Squadron of the 8th Air Force- 1108th MP Company, in England and Belfast, Ireland.
He was life time member of VFW Post 3081 and was charter member of the Taylor County Color Guard, having participated in 1,214 military funerals honoring his fallen comrades.
He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge #15 A.F. & A.M., Grafton, WV, 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, a member of Nemesis Shrine A.A.N.O.M.S., affiliated with Osiris Shrine and a charter member of the Taylor County Shrine Club. Mr. Marshall was a Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received at the Bartlett Funeral Home, Grafton, WV, on Thursday, March 11, 2010, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday, March, 12, 2010 from 10:00 am until the Funeral service at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Roger Harrison (nephew) and Rev. Ann Harrison officiating. Burial will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery with the Masonic Lodge conducting Masonic burial rites and full military graveside rites will be accorded by the VFW Taylor County Post #3081, D.A.V. Chapter 24, American Legion Post # 12, and the Army National Guard Honor Guard
In Lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Taylor County Color Guard, P.O. Box 482 Grafton, WV.
